The water pump is the heart of the YZF-R125’s cooling system. If you notice a "milky" substance in your oil window or coolant dripping from the small "weep hole" at the bottom of the right-side engine cover, your water pump seals have likely failed.

1. Identifying Water Pump Failure

  • The Weep Hole Leak: If coolant or oil is dripping from the hole beneath the pump, the internal mechanical seal is gone.

  • Contaminated Oil: If your oil looks like a "chocolate milkshake," the water pump seal has failed, allowing coolant into the crankcase. Stop riding immediately to avoid engine seizure.

  • Overheating: A failed impeller (though rare) will stop coolant circulation, causing a rapid temperature rise on your TFT or LCD display.

2. Tools & Parts Needed

  • New Water Pump Seal Kit: (Includes the mechanical seal, oil seal, and bearing).

  • Clutch Cover Gasket: You usually need to remove the right-side engine cover to access the internal drive gear.

  • Coolant: Use an ethylene glycol-based silicate-free coolant.

  • Torque Wrench: Crucial for the small M6 bolts.

3. Removal & Service Steps

  1. Drain the System: Remove the drain bolt on the water pump housing (the lowest bolt with a copper washer).

  2. Housing Removal: Undo the three bolts holding the plastic/metal housing.

  3. Accessing the Impeller: On Gen 1 & 2 models, the impeller is driven by the oil pump shaft. On Gen 3 & 4 (2019+), ensure the VVA oil lines are not obstructed when removing the side casing.

  4. Seal Replacement: Carefully press out the old mechanical seal. Tip: Do not scratch the housing bore, or the new seal will leak.

  5. Bearing Check: If the impeller shaft has "wobble" or play, replace the bearing while the pump is apart.

4. Reassembly & Torque Specs

  • Water Pump Housing Bolts: 10 Nm (7.2 ft-lb).

  • Drain Bolt: 10 Nm (Use a new copper washer).

  • Clutch Cover Bolts: 10 Nm (Tighten in a criss-cross pattern).

5. "Burping" the System (VVA Models)

Newer 2019–2026 models are prone to air locks.

  1. Refill the radiator and the reservoir.

  2. Start the engine with the radiator cap off.

  3. Gently "massage" the radiator hoses to push air bubbles toward the filler neck.

  4. Once the Radiator Fan kicks in, top up and seal the cap.

Essential Technical Links

Safety Warning: Never work on the cooling system while the engine is hot. Pressurized coolant can cause severe burns. Always wear full protective gear when riding to ensure your safety on the road.

Technical Tip: When installing the new mechanical seal, use a socket that matches the outer diameter of the seal to press it in evenly. Never hit the center of the seal, as this will crack the ceramic face.
