If your YZF-R125 is suffering from intermittent cutting out, "bogging" under heavy acceleration, or a complete "no-start" condition, the ignition coil is a primary component to inspect. Here is how to test the health of your spark system across all generations.
1. Signs of a Failing Ignition Coil
Engine Misfires: Especially noticeable when the engine gets hot.
Rough Idle: The bike struggles to stay running at stoplights.
Loss of Top-End Power: On 2019+ models, this can feel like the VVA isn't engaging correctly.
Backfiring: Unburnt fuel entering the exhaust due to a weak or missed spark.
2. The Resistance Test (Using a Multimeter)
To confirm the coil is functioning, you must measure the resistance of the Primary and Secondary windings.
Preparation: Turn the ignition OFF and remove the spark plug cap from the plug.
Primary Coil Resistance:
Connect your multimeter (Ω) to the two small terminals where the wires plug into the coil.
Spec (All Models): 2.16 – 2.64 Ω at 20°C.
Secondary Coil Resistance:
Connect one probe to the primary terminal and the other inside the spark plug cap (or the high-tension lead itself).
Spec (Gen 1 & 2): 8.64 – 12.96 kΩ.
Spec (Gen 3 & 4 VVA): 10.0 – 14.0 kΩ.
Note: If your reading is "OL" (Open Loop), the internal wire is snapped and the coil must be replaced.
3. The Spark Plug Cap (The Silent Killer)
Often, the coil is fine but the Spark Plug Cap has vibrated loose or corroded internally.
Unscrew the cap from the thick high-tension wire.
Measure the resistance of the cap alone. It should be approximately 5 kΩ. If it’s significantly higher, your spark will be too weak to jump the gap under compression.
4. Modern Diagnostics (2023–2026 Models)
On newer models with the TFT display, a failing ignition circuit will often trigger a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL).
Error Code 33: Ignition coil primary wire is open or shorted.
Action: Check the wiring harness for "rubbing" against the frame before buying a new coil.
