How to test motorcycle relays

Yamaha YZF R125 will not start no spark diagnostics

In 2014, we talked about basic battery health. In 2026, the YZF-R125 faces "Electrical Debt"—years of vibration and moisture affecting its sensors and connectors. To keep your bike’s "Wide Moat" of reliability, you need a systematic approach to the circuit.

1. The "Big Three" Ground Points

The most common cause of "Ghost Faults" (flickering lights or random stalling) isn't a bad part; it's a bad ground.

  • The Fix: Locate the main ground wires connected to the frame and engine. Clean the contact points with a wire brush and apply a tiny bit of copper grease to prevent future "corrosion debt."

2. The Regulator/Rectifier (The Charging Heart)

If your battery is constantly flat despite being new, the "Reg/Rec" is the likely culprit.

  • The 2026 Check: Use a multimeter across the battery with the engine running at 5,000 RPM. You should see 14.0V to 14.4V.

  • The Warning: If you see over 15V, the regulator has failed "open." It will "cook" your battery and potentially fry the dash. Replace it immediately.

3. The Starter Relay "Click"

If the bike won't crank but the lights are bright:

  • The Diagnostic: The starter relay (solenoid) can seize with age. You can test it by "bridging" the two main terminals with an insulated screwdriver—if the starter spins, the relay is dead.

4. Modern LED Upgrades

In 2026, many owners swap the old halogen bulbs for LEDs to reduce the load on the stator.

  • The Pro-Tip: If you install LED indicators, you must swap the flasher relay for an "LED-consistent" version, or they will flash at "Hyper-speed," which is a safety fail during an MOT.

Testing the Charge of a battery

Test battery at the negative and positive terminals

If you have a voltage meter you can do some basic tests.

When the engine has been off for at least 1-2 hours with ignition key turned off,
100% Charged 12.60 to 12.8v
75% Charged 12.4v
50% Charged 12.1v
25% Charged 11.9v
0% Charged less than 11.8v
