Yamaha R125 clutch juddering ~ Anti judder spring seats

Safety First: Ensure the engine is completely cool and the bike is securely on a stand before removing the clutch cover. Always use a torque wrench when reassembling clutch bolts to prevent snapping them or causing uneven pressure.

If your Yamaha YZF-R125 suffers from "juddering" or a vibrating sensation when pulling away, the issue often lies within the clutch assembly. This guide covers the two primary mechanical causes and how to resolve them.

1. The Anti-Judder Spring Seats

Inside the clutch basket, there are two specific spring seats designed to sit behind the first (smaller) friction plate.

  • The Function: These seats provide the necessary tension to ensure the plates separate and engage smoothly.

  • The Fix: If these are missing or incorrectly installed, the clutch can "nip" or bind, leading to a jerky take-off. Ensure they are seated correctly within the narrow-profile friction plate.

2. Clutch Drive Gear Rivets

A common but often overlooked source of noise is the primary drive gear attached to the back of the clutch basket.

  • The Symptoms: If you hear a "knocking" sound at idle that disappears when you pull the clutch lever, or feel a distinct shudder under load, check the rivets.

  • The Fix: Over time, the rivets holding the gear to the basket can work loose. If there is any play or movement between the gear and the basket, the assembly should be replaced to prevent further engine vibration or mechanical failure.

Pro-Tip for Reassembly

When putting the clutch back together, always soak new friction plates in fresh engine oil for at least 30 minutes. Tighten the clutch spring bolts in a diagonal "star" pattern to ensure even pressure across the pressure plate. The 2 spring seats fit inside the smaller first clutch friction plate, this prevents binding or nipping of the clutch when being operated.

Another place that can develop judder or knocking on these clutches is the rivets on the drive gear , they become lose and can cause judder or knocking.
