⚠️ Safety Warning: An MOT certificate only confirms the bike was roadworthy at the time of the test. It is not a guarantee of future reliability. Always perform your own weekly "BOLT" (Brakes, Oil, Lights, Tyres) checks to ensure your safety between annual inspections.
Yamaha YZF-R125 Pre-MOT Checklist
The MOT test is a mandatory annual inspection in the UK for bikes over three years old. Many failures on the YZF-R125 are caused by simple, preventable issues. Use this guide to check your bike before heading to the testing station.
1. Lights, Indicators & Horn
Function: Check the high/low beam, indicators (front and rear), and the horn.
Brake Light: Ensure the rear light illuminates when applying both the front lever and the rear pedal.
Condition: Lenses must be secure and free from major cracks.
2. Steering & Suspension
Headstock Bearings: Lift the front wheel and check for "notchiness" or play in the steering.
Forks: Check for oil leaks on the fork stanchions (a common R125 failure).
Rear Shock: Ensure the rear suspension is firm and shows no signs of fluid leakage.
3. Wheels, Tyres & Brakes
Tyre Tread: Must have at least 1mm of tread across the center 3/4 of the tyre (though 1.6mm is recommended).
Tyre Condition: Look for bulges, deep cuts, or exposed cords.
Brake Pads: Ensure there is visible friction material left.
Wheel Bearings: Grab the top and bottom of the wheel and shake; there should be no sideways movement.
4. The "Final Checks"
Drive Chain: Ensure it is correctly tensioned and lubricated. Excessive wear or a "kinked" chain can result in a fail.
Exhaust: Must be secure and not excessively noisy. If you have an aftermarket exhaust, ensure it has a removable baffle or a "road legal" stamp.
Registration Plate: Must be clean, legible, and the correct legal size (no small "show plates").
